Alex Dabagh started Anybag, a company that makes tote bags from recycled plastic, two years ago. He came up with the idea after the staggering sight of all the single-use plastic bags that piled up in his primary business, a 6,000-square-foot leather goods factory that makes bags for Gabriela Hearst, Altuzarra and Proenza Schouler. He broke down the bags into long strands, heat sealed them and cued them up on a massive loom to make totes of various sizes.
His employees can weave five to seven yards of plastic a day, enough for about 20 bags. He and his team have partnered with Adidas, Ralph Lauren and Beyond Meat to produce a limited edition of bags — as well as with Miranda Kerr’s beauty line, Kora Organics. And he and his staff also custom-weave bags for media events, and for brands such as Eileen Fisher and Ralph Lauren that use them internally.
