The Scale of the Workforce
Public and private K-12 schools in the United States employ well over 6 million people combined. That includes roughly 3.2 million public school teachers, plus several hundred thousand more in private schools, spread across approximately 13,000 public school districts and around 98,000 public schools nationally.
Where the Roles Actually Are
Elementary teachers make up the single largest group nationally, at an estimated 1.5 million, with secondary teachers adding roughly 1.1 million more. Below the classroom, every district staffs a business official, a curriculum director, a technology director, and typically a special education coordinator, an athletic director, and a food services director, each with independent budget authority in their own area.
Why This Matters Beyond Curiosity
For district leaders fielding vendor outreach, understanding this structure explains why the volume and specificity of that outreach has increased. Vendors are getting better at identifying the right department-level contact instead of blanketing every superintendent inbox in the country, which should, in theory, mean more relevant pitches landing and fewer irrelevant ones.
A Note on Data Quality
The workforce data behind this kind of targeting is only as good as its refresh cycle. Staff directories change constantly, especially at the curriculum and technology director level, and a stale list produces the generic, poorly targeted outreach that gives the whole category a bad name.
