Geriatric dentistry
Providing care to the elderly is an added challenge for many dentists. They have to be well-trained, understand the special needs of the mature population and be able to offer compassionate and patient-focused service.
Older patients have a wide variety of dental problems. Besides having teeth that are more fragile, they are often taking multiple medications. This increases the risk of medication errors and drug interactions.
Providing oral health services can help reduce the cost of dental care for the elderly. In addition, it can improve the quality of life for the elderly.
In this study, we assessed the knowledge of general dentists about geriatric dentistry and evaluated the attitudes toward this practice. In particular, we studied the dentists’ self-reported ability to deal with the problems of older people. Approximately 40% of the dentists felt that current dental education was insufficient in preparing them to provide this service. We also assessed the availability of facilities needed to provide this service.
Overall, we found that most of the Iranian dentists had a moderately positive attitude towards the elderly. However, a high percentage of them reported that their academic dental education was inadequate in preparing them to offer geriatric dental services.
Most dental schools in Iran did not have a separate department for geriatric dentistry. We found that the dental schools had only occasional lectures on geriatrics. The majority of the schools mentioned some hours of training in geriatrics. Only one school had a group seminar.
The average capacity of the Iranian dentists was average. Although the majority of the dentists had good knowledge, almost 30% had inadequate knowledge in treating complex medical conditions.
The majority of the dentists were satisfied with their communication skills and were able to effectively communicate with the older population. A significant correlation was found between knowledge and attitude.
